International Women’s Day 2021: Steps to Success

MiA talking through walking – summer 2020

The theme of International women’s day 2021 is Choose to Challenge

We can all choose to challenge and call out gender bias and inequality. We can all choose to seek out and celebrate women’s achievements. Collectively, we can all help create an inclusive world. From challenge comes change, so let’s all choose to challenge.

It’s a clear call to action. New global data from UN Women suggests that the covid-19 pandemic could erase 25 years of increasing gender equality. We know that the challenges posed by the global pandemic have been disproportionately shouldered by women but for MiA it has also highlighted the enormous privilege that our “normal” access to education affords us as staff, for our students and for our own children.

It is for this reason that we have all signed up to the “Steps to Success” walking route created by the UK charity, Educating The Children in their support of International Women’s Day. Their mission is to empower girls & young women in East Africa through education and training that leads to employment.

As educators promoting and addressing issues of equality, diversity and inclusivity in both the profession and education it seemed a fitting challenge for MiA; allowing us to bank the collective steps on our daily walks in support of ETC, whilst we support each other and ensure that we are also taking care of ourselves as we try to balance the increased demands on our time.

If you would like to join us on our somewhat ambitious ‘walk’ to Kampala in Uganda, please sign up for the Steps to Success route on the world walking app and log your steps with MiA, manually or with a fit bit or health tracker.  https://worldwalking.org/walks/explore/5393xk

Choose to challenge!

Get outdoors to make the most of the improving spring weather and lets collectively walk through and out of Covid and towards a better future .
